The Blu 80 mm paver is the thicker version of Techo-Bloc’s classic Blu slab. Its increased thickness makes it better suited for heavily used pedestrian areas and light vehicular traffic. This interlocking paver comes in three different textures to fit the stylistic needs of your project: Slate, Smooth, and Polished. Blu 80 Smooth offers a sleek surface and clean modern lines that will highlight any contemporary outdoor space. This paver comes in three compatible formats that are palletized together and can be assembled into both linear and modular patterns. The smallest of the three formats (Blu 80 mm 6” x 13”) also comes separately and can be laid out by itself to create stacked and running bond, parquet, and herringbone patterns. This small paver is also a favorite for banding, soldier courses, and inlays. Good-looks and versatility aren’t the only things Blu 80 has to offer. This paver can be installed in a permeable application to help manage stormwater runoff responsibly. Permeable pavers are an eco-friendly solution that help prevent the overloading of local sewage networks, with the added bonus of making LEED certification easier to attain. Blu 80 mm Smooth is ADA compliant and de-icing salt resistant, making it an appropriate and durable solution for any urban commercial, institutional, or industrial hardscape project.

Can Blu 80 Smooth be used on steep driveways?

Yes. Blu 80 Smooth is designed for driveways, including sloped ones. For added stability, use a reinforced base, strong edge restraints, and interlocking patterns like herringbone to reduce paver movement.

How does Blu 80 Smooth compare to Blu 80 Slate in slip resistance?

Blu 80 Smooth, while sleeker, can also improve traction when installed in tighter patterns such as herringbone. Blu 80 Slate’s textured surface provides more natural grip, particularly in wet weather.

Is Blu 80 Smooth ADA compliant?

Yes. Tested to ANSI A326.3, Blu 80 Smooth meets ADA slip-resistance standards. It’s suitable for accessible driveways, walkways, and transitions between vehicular and pedestrian spaces.

What laying patterns are recommended for Blu 80 Smooth?

Blu 80 Smooth works well in modular and linear designs. The 6.5×13 unit is also compatible with herringbone and parquet layouts, which add strength under vehicular loads.

Does Blu 80 Smooth maintain its color over time?

Yes. With UV-stable pigments and an HD² surface, Blu 80 Smooth resists fading and helps preserve its original color long term.

How should oil stains be cleaned from Blu 80 Smooth?

For light stains, use dish soap or a concrete-safe degreaser. For heavier stains, try Gator Clean XP or Prosoco Oil & Grease Remover before pressure washing. Always treat the stain before using high-pressure cleaning. See our Care & Maintenance guide.

Is sealing recommended for Blu 80 Smooth?

Sealing is optional. It can enrich color and provide extra stain protection, but the pavers’ durability isn’t affected if unsealed. Wait at least one year after installation and clean thoroughly before sealing. See Care & Maintenance.

What texture options are available in the Blu collection?

The Blu collection is available in three finishes, with HD² options offered on certain textures:
  • Smooth (HD² option available) – a clean, modern concrete surface with straight lines and a refined minimalist look.
  • Slate (HD² option available) – a subtly textured surface that adds grip and visual depth, ideal for patios and walkways.
  • Polished – a glossy, reflective surface that creates a sleek, upscale appearance for outdoor living spaces.
Note: HD² finishes enhance the same styles with superior strength, long-lasting durability, vibrant color blends, and ultra-detailed textures.

How much does a Blu 80 Smooth driveway cost?

Pricing depends on driveway size, slope, and installation method. Estimate by square foot, including pavers, base layers, and labor. For an exact quote, contact a Techo-Bloc dealer or certified installer.

What type of jointing sand should be used with Blu 80 Smooth?

Polymeric joint sand such as Flexlock G2 is recommended. For wider joints or overlays, Flexlock Ultra Sand G2 offers additional stability.

What edge restraints are required for Blu 80 Smooth installations?

Use heavy-duty edge restraints in aluminum, steel, or reinforced plastic to keep pavers locked in place and prevent movement under vehicle traffic.

Are Blu 80 Smooth pavers permeable?

Not in their standard installation. However, the 6.5×13 module, used on its own or combined with other Blu sizes, can be laid over an open-graded base with wider joints filled with clean stone. This design creates about 4.5% surface openings and allows high water infiltration.

What load capacity do Blu 80 Smooth pavers have?

Blu 80 Smooth meets ASTM C936 strength standards. When installed over a proper base, they are rated for residential driveways and other light vehicular applications.

Can Blu 80 Smooth be installed over an existing concrete slab?

Yes. Installation over concrete is possible if drainage is addressed. Use a drainage mat, pedestal system, or mortar bond to prevent water accumulation beneath the pavers.

Which Techo-Bloc pavers are best suited for driveways compared to patios or walkways?

Blu 80 Smooth is specifically recommended for driveways and high-load areas. For patios, walkways, and poolside applications, Blu 60 Smooth or Blu 60 Slate slabs are the better option.

Regular Smooth offers the clean, familiar finish of traditional concrete. Our standard mix is less porous than many competitors' products, while maintaining the natural surface characteristics typical of concrete.

HD² Smooth Texture

HD² Technology creates an almost poreless surface with a dense, tight texture that absorbs far less water than Regular Smooth finish. This reduces surface wear over decades while enhancing color vibrancy, where HD² shows richer tones compared to the muted look of a standard mix.
