A kid-friendly backyard that still feels beautiful

A young family in Quebec City wanted a backyard that could keep up with real life: kids running around, summer swims, and outdoor dinners, without sacrificing something natural and elevated. Designed by Aline Gravel and built by Le Regard Vert, the result proves a family backyard can be practical without looking it.

The story behind the transformation

Before the redesign, the yard already had charm, but the homeowners were craving more. Their wish was simple: a fountain and a quiet corner to breathe. With the lush vegetation already doing half the work, the real goal became creating a space where they could slow down, sink in, and stay connected to the greenery they love.

Regard Vert and designer Aline Graveline took that vision and shaped it into something purposeful. Every area now has intention without losing the softness of the original garden. And at the heart of it all is exactly what the homeowners hoped for: a space that feels grounded, intimate, and just tucked away enough to exhale.

Materials that make the whole yard feel intentional

Westmount pavers in Chestnut Brown and Onyx Black were used across the patio and steps to create a warm, natural transition from the house into the backyard. Because the home has a classic old-English character with warm brown tones, the hardscape needed to feel like it belonged, and the Chestnut Brown tone achieves exactly that.

Natural stone caps on the steps and around the water feature add another layer of texture, bringing a raw, grounded quality to the space. Together with the Westmount pavers, they create a balanced mix of manufactured stone and natural material that feels warm, cohesive, and connected to the home.

A pool that blends into the landscape

The saltwater pool was designed to feel like a natural pond rather than the loudest feature in the yard. The dark interior, stone coping, and planting brought close to the edge help the water sit quietly within the garden, while hidden filtration keeps the focus on atmosphere rather than mechanics. For the kids it is a place to swim and splash. For the adults it becomes a calm focal point. Nearby, a shaded pergola with a swing creates a quiet place to sit and stay close to the action.

Products that brought the vision to life

These materials work together to create a layout that feels warm and cohesive. Chestnut Brown Westmount pavers anchor the patio with natural texture. The natural stone Onyx Black step cap matches the Westmount Onyx Black border, creating a crisp, coordinated frame around the space. The result is a backyard that feels balanced, polished, and complete.
