Balancing Elegance, Durability, & Accessibility

Built to serve the Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures community, the Campus Community Centre was conceived as a year-round civic hub for cultural events, sports, and social gatherings. When the new building opened in 2021, its forecourt was largely occupied by asphalt parking and open lawn, generating heat-island effects and limiting public use.

In 2022, the city commissioned a full exterior redesign to reclaim paved surfaces, remove the parking apron, and transform the frontage into a multi-use civic plaza. Inspired by the site’s natural surroundings, the designers introduced a large-scale floral motif using Beige Cream to soften the plaza’s geometry with organic visual rhythm. A dedicated water zone offers a sensory play area for children, with light-colored pavers that stay cool underfoot. Designed for all ages, the space now functions as an intergenerational hub—where modern landscape design supports connection, comfort, and cultural expression.

Conversion From Asphalt

Replace a heat-prone parking apron with a pedestrian-focused civic space that invites community gatherings and supports daily activity.

Architectural Alignment

Reinforce the center’s minimalist architecture with a custom paver layout and precise geometry that frame entrances and landscaped zones.

Pedestrian Circulation

Provide intuitive pathways and gathering areas for events, recreation, and casual use — ensuring accessibility and flow.

Withstand Quebec’s severe freeze–thaw cycles, de-icing salts, and four-season use without surface cracking or discoloration.

The Solution

Industria HD² Granitex

For this project, the city selected Techo-Bloc’s Industria HD² Granitex, installed in Chestnut Brown and Beige Cream and to create a clear, structured civic plaza. The Industria HD² Granitex is a versatile rectangular featuring a granular, slip-resistant surface, designed forboth safety and durability. It’s precise geometry, and refined finish make it ideal for public space applications where aesthetics and long-term performance must work hand-in-hand.

Lightly Textured Surface

Industria HD² Granitex features a fine-grain finish that enhances slip resistance — especially important near the plaza’s interactive water feature. The texture improves safety for children while maintaining a refined architectural appearance.

High SRI Value

The Beige Cream format delivers a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of 42, minimizing heat absorption on sunny days. This improves comfort for barefoot play in splash areas and aligns with sustainable urban planning goals and LEED credits.

Engineered Durability

Resists freeze–thaw cycles, de-icing salts, and year-round pedestrian use without cracking or fading. It maintains surface integrity in Quebec’s harsh climate, supporting longevity in civic space applications.

Dimensional Precision

The paver’s clean lines and consistent geometry supported the creation of large-scale floral patterns that reference local natural surroundings.

A Public Plaza that Serves the Community

The completed plaza transforms what was once an asphalt forecourt into a civic landmark designed for daily use and long-term resilience. By combining Industria HD² Granitex in a custom layout with sustainable design principles, the Campus Community Centre is now a welcoming space for all seasons.
